Background: In the digital age, social media has become the primary ecosystem for new generations, influencing socialization, self-expression, and the search for validation. This has raised concerns about its impact on mental health, particularly on self-esteem. The constant online life can make this "emotional thermometer," as described by Leary and Baumeister's sociometer theory, unstable. This is due to constant comparison, the search for external validation, body dissatisfaction, and cyberbullying. Methods: This is a descriptive and documentary research using a mixed-methods approach to systematically analyze secondary sources. A literature review was conducted in the Scopus database between May and June 2025. Keywords in English and Spanish, such as “baja autoestima AND adolescentes AND redes sociales,” were used. Inclusion criteria were: full-text, peer-reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2024, focusing on the relationship between social media use and self-esteem in children and adolescents. Seven empirical studies were selected for detailed analysis from an initial pool of ten relevant articles.
