Abstract
This study originates from the Francisco de Miranda Educational Institution, located in the municipality of Rovira, Tolima, due to concerns about the rising school dropout rates in seventh, eighth, and ninth grades during the year 2025. Its main objective is to identify and examine the social and cultural reasons that influence students' retention in the educational system, considering dropout as a complex phenomenon that encompasses various dimensions of the family, institutional, and community context. Through direct observations, surveys conducted with students, parents, and school administrators, interviews, and social mapping, several factors were identified, including the low educational level of parents, lack of emotional support at home, economic difficulties, lack of motivation toward studying, limited communication between families and schools, and the influence of community environments characterized by poverty, drug use, and the absence of support networks. The most significant finding was the creation of a visual map illustrating the main factors identified in the area, providing a clearer and more contextualized understanding of the problem. This research does not propose a direct intervention but rather seeks to encourage deep reflection on the social and cultural realities that impact young people's lives, offering essential elements for future pedagogical and social initiatives aimed at strengthening school retention.
