Abstract
This qualitative study with an ethnographic design analyzes social representations of psychoactive substance use (PSU) among adolescents aged 13 to 15 at La Estancia San Isidro Labrador School in Ciudad Bolívar. Through focus groups and interviews, the study found that these young people associate the onset of substance use primarily with curiosity and continued use with a lack of personal willpower. The findings reveal a marked normalization of risk influenced by a local environment where use is commonplace and by a digital ecosystem that links substance use to symbols of economic success and fame, such as influencers and urban artists. In conclusion, the study shows that young people’s social representations downplay the real danger of substance use disorders by prioritizing social acceptance and the pursuit of material status, highlighting the need for prevention strategies tailored to their cultural norms and contextual realities.
