Abstract

The present research aims to distinguish the coping strategies of the students of grade 11° of the Juan de Dios Cock Educational Institution in the transition they will face when going from high school to university in the year 2024. From a cognitive-behavioral psychological perspective, we seek to identify the cognitive strategies and in turn detail the coping strategies. The motivation for this research arises from the experience as an intern at UNIMINUTO observing a crisis among students in their first semesters at the university due to the lack of strategies and preparation during their passage through high school. To address this issue, a semi-structured interview was conducted with the rector, teaching staff and 11th grade students with questions focused on how students face stressful and challenging situations in this transition from high school to university, and how they develop cognitive strategies to overcome them, taking into account that their main link within the institution is with the teaching staff who provide tools to make their adaptation more enjoyable. Finally, the Adolescent Coping Scales (ACS) test was applied to evaluate how students tend to cope with their concerns and responses to specific problems. The results revealed interesting patterns such as: preoccupation with the future and happiness, seeking social support and distraction to manage stress, tendency to self-blame and guilt. This study provides valuable information to understand the coping strategies of students in this critical transition and to develop effective interventions for their academic and personal success.
