Abstract
Abstract The present research aimed to describe the perception of meaning in life among a group of institutionalized older adults at the Padre Mariano José Foundation Geriatric Home in La Ceja, Antioquia. Using a qualitative phenomenological-hermeneutic approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six participants between the ages of 62 and 92. The results showed that the main sources of meaning in life are family, spirituality, and personal legacy, although feelings of emptiness and loneliness associated with institutionalization and the loss of social roles are observed. It was also identified that faith acts as a protective factor against hopelessness, and that the attitude toward suffering, more than external conditions, determines the preservation of life's purpose. The study concludes that meaning in life in institutionalized old age remains a dynamic process that can be strengthened through empathy, the redefinition of pain, and therapeutic support focused on human dignity.
