Abstract
The proper management of organic solid waste is a critical environmental challenge today. This research focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of composting as an environmental education tool in the management of this waste among 7th grade students of the Colegio Académico de Guadalajara de Buga. The research is based on the premise that composting can not only be an environmentally sustainable solution, but also a powerful pedagogical tool to promote ecological awareness among young people. The methodology employed is mixed, involving a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. Specific micro-classes on composting were designed and conducted. During the research time, data were collected through surveys, observations and learning assessments. The results obtained revealed that the implementation of micro-classes on composting not only significantly increased students' knowledge of organic solid waste management, but also generated a positive impact on their attitudes and behaviors towards the environment. Students demonstrated a greater commitment to organic waste reduction, waste separation and active participation in school composting projects. This approach, which combines theory with practice, offers an exemplary educational model that can be replicated in other educational institutions in search of a comprehensive approach in the formation of environmentally responsible citizens. The thesis concludes with a series of recommendations for the educational institution, teachers and educational policy makers, in order to strengthen the integration of environmental education and composting in the school curriculum. The work carried out in this research represents a significant step towards the creation of future generations aware of and committed to environmental sustainability.
