Abstract
This research focuses on identifying the barriers to accessing to treatment with biological therapeutics for patients diagnosed with breast cancer in the Bogota city and belonging to the patient support program of the Swiss pharmaceutical company. The identified barriers include structural, sociocultural, personal and financial problems, which have contributed to the increase in mortality and the progression of the disease. This study uses a mixed approach (qualitative and quantitative), collecting data through surveys and interviews with patients enrolled in the patient program who agreed to participate in this research process. The findings point to the need to develop effective strategies so that a patient can overcome the barriers, improving their quality of life and in the best cases guaranteeing their survival. Additionally, a review of theoretical, conceptual and legal background is made, highlighting the importance of biological drugs in the treatment of breast cancer. Additionally, a survey was conducted with patients enrolled in the patient program where several significant barriers to access treatment with biological drugs are revealed for: The main barriers identified were administrative and bureaucratic, financial, information and communication, sociocultural, and physical and logistical accessibility. The delay in authorization from the health insurer is the most prevalent, while the cost of treatment and the lack of adequate information also represent important challenges. Sociocultural barriers and the quality of interaction with health personnel negatively affect the patient experience
