Problem Statement This monograph examines the relationship between chronically elevated cortisol levels and the development or worsening of alexithymia. Although stress has been widely studied, less attention has been paid to how sustained physiological activation may impair emotional awareness and expression. Justification Understanding this association is essential, as alexithymia affects mental health, interpersonal functioning, and treatment outcomes. By exploring the psychobiological pathways involved, this work contributes to a deeper understanding of how prolonged stress influences emotional processing. Theoretical Background This study draws on research regarding the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis, stress physiology, neuroendocrine dysregulation, and contemporary theories of emotional processing. Prior findings suggest that chronic cortisol elevation alters limbic and prefrontal structures crucial for emotion regulation and awareness
