Abstract
Background: This study is a qualitative review aimed at analyzing the moral reasoning strategies used by university students when facing ethical dilemmas, identifying their characteristics, foundations, and influence on decision-making in diverse contexts. Methods: Searches were conducted in Google Scholar and Scopus in both English and Spanish, using search equations related to moral reasoning, ethical dilemmas, and university students. Inclusion criteria considered empirical studies with university populations, published between 2020 and 2025, in English or Spanish, that addressed moral reasoning and its strategies. Exclusion criteria included duplicates, theoretical studies, studies without variable analysis, psychometric instruments, and research involving other populations. After screening, 53 articles were included in the review, and the risk of bias was controlled through manual verification of the inclusion criteria. The results were organized into thematic categories and presented in a narrative description. Results: From the 53 articles, the main strategies identified were grouped into seven categories, broadly understood as cognitive, affective, and normative. Based on their interpretation, the characteristics of these strategies and their influence on decision-making in the face of ethical dilemmas were described narratively. The similarities and differences among the strategies were explained according to the type of dilemma, academic discipline, and cultural context.
