La consulta popular realizada en el municipio de Cumaral se caracteriza al menos por tres elementos: el primero, se llevó a cabo en el departamento del Meta, el cual desde 2008 es el primer productor de petróleo con una producción cercana al 40 % del total nacional, con campos como Rubiales, Castilla, Quifa, Chichimene, Ocelote, entre otros.
