Abstract
The purpose of this research is to conduct a documentary review of bibliographic and scientific sources over the last five years on the use of recycled materials in construction processes in Latin America. Based on the mixed method with a deductive approach and analytical scope, we refer to the concept of sustainability within the environmental, social and economic parameters of each country within the study, as the central axis of the analysis. We found that plastic is the most commonly used input for the manufacture of eco-bricks or to improve Portland cement; followed by other types of less common elements such as: seashells, sewage sludge and rice waste. Likewise, we identified that conscious decision-making by professionals is vital to characterize a building as sustainable, since, despite using traditional materials, the selection of these adds to improving the conditions of the structure in its life cycle.
