Abstract
This bibliographic review focused on analyzing the current state of abaca fiber worldwide, considering its production, quality, industrialization and commercialization. Abaca is recognized as a vital resource in various industries due to its unique qualities, from its strength and durability in fabric manufacturing to its versatility in sectors such as the textile, paper and composite materials industries. Regarding global abaca production, a significant concentration is identified in specific regions, especially in the Philippines, although other countries such as Ecuador, Costa Rica and Tanzania have ventured into its cultivation in recent decades. This diversification raises questions about the quality and uniformity of the product, as well as sustainable practices in its cultivation and harvest. The growing demand for finer and more uniform fibers in industries such as textiles and automotive drives research into genetic improvement and agronomic management techniques to optimize the quality of abaca fiber. Additionally, more efficient processing methods are being developed to ensure consistent quality standards in industrial production. The commercialization of abaca faces challenges in an increasingly competitive global market, but also offers opportunities for innovation in the creation of high value-added products and the exploration of new markets and applications. The promotion of sustainable practices and certification of origin are crucial to ensure the long-term viability of this industry. In the Colombian context, the lack of research on the production and transformation of natural fibers such as abacá stands out as an opportunity to promote environmental sustainability and the well being of local agricultural communities. This study seeks to acquire international references that support research derived from the topic to contribute to the solidity of the writing, thus contributing to a broader understanding of the global panorama of abaca and offering insights into its potential in a specific region of Colombia.
