Abstract
Abstract This study explores the phenomenon of psychotherapy dropout among adult university students at Universidad Minuto de Dios, Bello campus, aiming to understand the personal, relational, and institutional factors that influence their decision to discontinue psychological support. Using a qualitative, descriptive-interpretative approach, the research employed semi-structured interviews with three students who began and later abandoned their therapeutic process at the university’s Psychological Attention Center (CAPS). Thematic content analysis revealed four core categories: lack of therapeutic bond, methodological incompatibility, institutional and logistical factors, and reflection or resignification of dropout. The findings indicate that dropout is not solely due to a lack of commitment from the client, but rather the result of multiple interacting dimensions, including the quality of the therapeutic relationship, the alignment of therapeutic approaches with user expectations, and the administrative and contextual conditions of the service. The study concludes that strengthening the therapeutic alliance, diversifying intervention models, improving institutional organization, and fostering warmer and more accessible support spaces are key actions to reduce dropout rates in university psychological services. This research contributes to a critical and humanistic understanding of psychotherapy dropout, emphasizing the importance of relational and institutional responsibility in the therapeutic experience.
