The research addresses family dynamics and institutional support networks during and after the process of deprivation of liberty in families in commune two of the District of Medellin. A qualitative methodology with a phenomenological approach was used, applying semi-structured interviews to collect data and allow participants to express their experiences in an open and detailed manner, focusing on families that have had members deprived of liberty. Specific objectives were established, such as inquiring about family roles and ties, describing the family reintegration process and identifying available support networks. The need for support networks to facilitate reintegration was evidenced, finding that emotional and economic accompaniment is crucial to face the difficulties that arise during and after the process of deprivation of liberty. These findings underline the relevance of family support in the reintegration process of persons deprived of liberty, it was found that family dynamics are significantly transformed in this process, being affected by factors such as the reorganization of roles, the emotional burden, the breakdown of communication and the need for readaptation after release, however, resilience, union and communication make the family stronger and adapt positively to the different circumstances. Subsequently, the interviews allowed identifying in family reintegration, the role of the provider in the family continues to be assumed by the maternal figure during the time of imprisonment, as in post-conviction, which could lead to an economic and emotional burden. Regarding institutional support networks, the interviews revealed a lack of accompaniment by the State for these families; without the necessary accompaniment, post-convicted inmates face difficulties that may have negative repercussions on their family relationships and increase the risk of recidivism. Even though CONPES 3828 of 2015 on penitentiary and prison policy in Colombia exposes the need to develop effective strategies that involve families in prison treatment and in post-penitentiary life, it was evidenced that state policies fail to provide adequate and sufficient support during and after the incarceration process.
