Abstract
Abstract The present study aimed to analyze, thru a narrative review of studies published between 2020 and 2025, the functioning of romantic love from a neuroscientific perspective and its social implications; to this end, 26 studies found in the PubMed and Science Direct databases and the Google Scholar search engine were reviewed; of these, 14 were related to the neurobiological bases of romantic love and 12 to its social, cultural, religious, and technological variables. The findings indicated that romantic love involves a dynamic interaction among the brain’s reward, motivation, cognition, and attachment systems, along with social and cultural factors that shape its expression. From a neuroscience perspective, the activation of the mesolimbic dopaminergic circuit, which underlies pleasure-seeking and bond consolidation, is highlighted, while current cultural and technological transformations reveal new forms of bonding mediated by digitization and social exposure. This information allows us to conclude that biology and context reciprocally influence how the loving bond is experienced, maintained, and transformed; for it is the result of the dynamic interaction of neurobiological, psychological, and sociocultural factors.
