Abstract
The purpose of this monograph is to analyze the role of the social worker in the accompaniment of families facing perinatal bereavement in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU), emphasizing the emotional complexity of this experience and the relevance of sensitive and specialized support in these cases. A documentary review was conducted, covering research exploring perinatal bereavement and social intervention practices in hospital settings. For the case study, intervention programs in hospitals in Medellín were examined, highlighting perinatal bereavement care strategies and the specific role of the social worker in the accompaniment process. In this sense, Carrillo (2019) mentions that perinatal bereavement can be complicated if adequate support is not provided in neonatal intensive care units. The research is qualitative in approach and is based on the hermeneutic paradigm, which allowed to delve into the bereavement experiences of families and how the interventions of social workers influence the process of acceptance of loss. As well as the need for empathic, personalized communication and strategies to reduce the psychological impact of perinatal loss. Through this exploration, the lack of resources and specific programs in some institutions becomes visible, which limits the adequate accompaniment of affected families. Finally, we conclude on the importance of social work for the humanization of health services in the context of perinatal bereavement, highlighting the need for an interdisciplinary approach to meet the emotional and cultural needs of families. This study opens the door to future research that explores innovative and sustainable strategies to improve the accompaniment of families in perinatal bereavement in the hospital setting.
