Abstract
Abstract The consumption of tusi in Medellín is a phenomenon that transcends addiction, reflecting a profound human vulnerability and the need to alleviate emotional burden. This qualitative investigation, based on Amedeo Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenology, inquired into the lived experiences of two adult participants residing in commune 8 of Medellín to understand the subjective meaning of consumption. Histories of foundational trauma, such as corporal invasion, and supervening trauma, such as tragic bereavement and domestic violence, were observed—elements that collapsed the subjects’ affective integrity. Through in-depth interviews, tusi was identified as acting as a dual coping strategy. It operates as a chemical modulator that provides immediate relief from trauma, void, or intense emotional dysregulation, silencing the chronic hypervigilance generated by insecure attachment and a deficit of containment. Simultaneously, it is configured as a social mediator that facilitates belonging and group validation. The findings paradoxically reveal that this search for relief, activates axes of reconstruction. Processes such as motherhood, work commitment, spiritual development, and service emerge as anchors of resilience, driving the reframing of the self beyond the pain. It is concluded that tusi consumption is the reflection of a socio-affective and relational fracture, where the substance is a desperate attempt to find relief and genuine connection amidst profound existential suffering.
