This research project analyzes the influence of artistic expression in dance and theater within community training processes as an alternative professional career path in Medellín. The research is conducted using a qualitative approach, based on the interpretive paradigm, seeking to understand how participants live, feel, and construct their identity through art, guiding their life projects. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six female artists who participate in, promote, and support community dance and theater initiatives in various neighborhoods of the city, using a snowball sampling technique that facilitated the expansion of the sample through direct recommendations. From the narratives collected, results were identified related to the social imaginaries surrounding artists, such as the common perception that “they are crazy,” “art is not studied,” or that “art is not a profession and does not generate income.” Likewise, the importance of building support networks and community ties that drive processes of social transformation was evident. On the other hand, it became clear that these women's life plans based on art can be configured in two ways: firstly, as a source of economic sustenance and part of their professional plans, and secondly, as a generator of a profound sense of meaning in life. In addition, the role of social organizations as spaces for meeting, dialogue, collective creation, and overcoming territorial challenges is highlighted, thus strengthening training processes and community development.
