Abstract
This research analyzes how representations of afro hair of black women are configured in the media and digital platforms in Colombia, particularly in the city of Medellin. The study starts from an intersectional perspective that articulates structural racism, Eurocentric aesthetic standards and the tensions faced by black women in relation to the normativity of the body and beauty. It is proposed that afro hair is not only a physical characteristic, it is a cultural sign loaded with political, historical and symbolic meanings that has been the target of stigmatization, control and whitening, but it has also been re-signified as an act of resistance, agency and identity affirmation. Through semi-structured interviews with black women who work as influencers, journalists and content creators in Medellín, as well as a critical analysis of media, we examine the narratives, discourses and aesthetics that circulate about afro hair. This research proposes a reading of afro hair as a means of expression and resistance in the contemporary communicative field.
