Abstract
La gestión adecuada de residuos en el sector de la salud es esencial para garantizar un entorno seguro y saludable para pacientes y personal médico, además de minimizar el impacto negativo en el medio ambiente. En Medellín, las empresas prestadoras de salud de tercer nivel han implementado diversas estrategias de gestión de residuos, cada una con enfoques y prácticas particulares. Sin embargo, la eficacia de estas estrategias y su impacto ambiental aún no se ha evaluado de manera integral.
Se empleó un enfoque cualitativo mediante el análisis documental de información de instituciones de salud de tercer nivel en Medellín, se recopiló información sobre sus prácticas de gestión de residuos, políticas ambientales y resultados obtenidos.
Además, se identificaron diferentes enfoques en la gestión de residuos entre las instituciones estudiadas, incluyendo programas de reciclaje, tratamiento de residuos biosanitarios y medidas de eficiencia en el uso de recursos naturales.
La diversidad de enfoques en la gestión de residuos refleja la necesidad de adaptar las estrategias a las características y necesidades específicas de cada institución. Se destacan prácticas innovadoras y efectivas que podrían servir como referencia para promover estrategias más sostenibles en el sector de la salud en Medellín. Sin embargo, se requiere una evaluación continua y monitoreo ambiental para garantizar la efectividad y mejora continua de estas prácticas.
Proper waste management in the healthcare sector is essential to ensure a safe and healthy environment for both patients and medical staff, as well as to minimize the negative impact on the environment. In Medellín, tertiary healthcare providers have implemented various waste management strategies, each with unique approaches and practices. However, the effectiveness of these strategies and their environmental impact have not yet been comprehensively evaluated. A qualitative approach was used through the documentary analysis of information from tertiary healthcare institutions in Medellín, gathering data on their waste management practices, environmental policies, and outcomes achieved. Additionally, different approaches to waste management among the studied institutions were identified, including recycling programs, biosanitary waste treatment, and resource use efficiency measures. The diversity of waste management approaches reflects the need to tailor strategies to the specific characteristics and needs of each institution. Noteworthy are innovative and effective practices that could serve as references for promoting more sustainable strategies in Medellín's healthcare sector. However, ongoing evaluation and environmental monitoring are required to ensure the effectiveness and continuous improvement of these practices.
