Un referente citado a la hora de comprender la Modernidad es el filósofo francés René Descartes, su protagonismo reside en su contribución a la hora de afrontar la crisis escéptica y crear un nuevo método filosófico basado en la autoridad metafísica y divina de la razón, con el ejercicio de duda metódica presentado en las dos primeras meditaciones metafísicas, generando así, la solución a los antagonismos intelectuales, políticos y culturales propios de este periodo histórico. Pero, además, su participación en la historia intelectual de Occidente afianzará los valores culturales amenazados por la reforma protestante, cimentando el dualismo, superando el escepticismo pirrónico y el avance del humanismo renacentista, fundamentando así el aparato ideológico trascendental propio de este proceso histórico y legado a todo el proceso intelectual y filosófico del desarrollo hegemónico de la cultura occidental en el periodo de la Modernidad
