Description:	This work is an attempt to define democracy from a broad philosophical perspective with two dimensions. The first is the ontological condition in which the acceptance of others as different – alterity/otherness – takes place. The second is the acceptance of conflict as an essential component of socio-political phenomena, which must be channeled or regulated. The ways in which the conflictive nature of humans can be regulated non-violently are what we have called “democracy”. And this kind of reflection should be set – epistemologically speaking – in a hermeneutical idea of truth and regulation of social life, where the normative ideal is the negation of fundamentalisms and totalitarianisms. El presente trabajo es un intento por definir la democracia desde una perspectiva filosófica amplia que toma dos dimensiones. La primera de éstas es la condición ontológica en la que se realiza la aceptación de los otros como diferentes: la alteridad. La segunda es la aceptación del conflicto como el constituyente esencial de lo sociopolítico, el cual debe ser encauzado o regulado. Las formas en que se pueda regular la conflictividad humana de manera no violenta es lo que hemos denominado como democracia. Y este tipo de reflexión debe inscribirse, epistemológicamente hablando, en una idea hermenéutica de verdad y de regulación de la vida social, donde el ideal normativo sea la negación de los fundamentalismos y de los totalitarismos.
