| es_ES |

dc.description.abstractenglish | The growth of cities that started in recent centuries, first in Europe, then in the United States and subsequently around the globe, has attracted the most diverse perspectives on the urban phenomenon. A process of urbanization that simultaneously has allowed the development of productive forces, the growth of wealth, the exacerbation of human poverty and the socioeconomic inequality, has resulted in a range of views that has created supporters and detractors of urbanization and modern city. The contemporary city, the epicenter of decision making, productive activities, the cultural and artistic creation, the informal economy, social inequality and violence, appears as a fact difficult to address. This paper is panning for some of the assumptions that the city developed in early modernity, in the historical context of Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. There, the antagonism is expressed; paradise and apocalypse are evident in the most diverse authors when they are speaking of the city, it remains an open question for the reader: are these interpretations still relevant to the ongoing process of urbanization occurring across the globe? | us_US |
