The growing concern about cruelty in the treatment of animals has been promoted, in large measure, by the dissemination in academic environments of philosophical approaches addressing the matter from different positions and principles. In the framework of this article I shall outline, by way of introduction, some of these philosophical arguments for the moral impropriety of animal abuse. To this end, we shall reconstruct the main concepts that led to the discussion of the need to expand the moral community framework for the consideration of animals. In this task we shall address Henry Salt’s conceptualization of animal rights and Singer’s formulation of the principal of equal consideration of interests, as well as Martha Nussbaum’s capacities approach. These considerations will constitute the initial formulation of a framework for explaining why we should have moral consideration for non-human animals. |

La creciente preocupación por la crueldad en el trato hacia los animales ha sido impulsada, en gran medida, por la difusión en ámbitos académicos de enfoques filosóficos que abordan dicha cuestión desde posturas y principios distintos. En el marco de este escrito esbozaré, a modo de prolegómeno, algunas de esas razones filosóficas que argumentan la incorrección moral del maltrato animal. Según dicho propósito, reconstruiré los principales conceptos que dieron inicio a la discusión sobre la necesidad de ampliar el marco de la comunidad moral para la consideración de los animales. En esa labor, abordaré la conceptualización de derecho de los animales hecha por Henry Salt y la formulación del principio de igual consideración de intereses de Singer, así como, el enfoque de las capacidades de Martha Nussbaum. Dichas consideraciones construirán la formulación inicial de un marco que explica por qué deberíamos considerar moralmente a los animales no humanos. |
