The purpose of this theoretical research work is to study academic stress in university
students and its effects on mental health, taking as input the scientific publications on the
subject; for this purpose, it uses other studies by performing a conceptual analysis and the
results obtained by such research on academic stress, the different types of academic
stressors, the symptomatology and the skills that are available to face the problem. It is clear
that academic stress, as well as work stress, necessarily has repercussions on the
psychological states of the population. For this reason, a qualitative documentary study is
carried out with the aim of investigating and discussing academic stress, the main stressors
and typifying the skills that people have to face the problem of stress. It is expected that the
results will shed important light related to psychology, so that university students, mainly
those who are completing the professional academic cycle, can better cope with stress,
transforming the negative elements into positive results by adequately addressing the
identified stressors. In this sense, the work concludes that stress is a product of the overload
of university activities and responsibilities, students close to graduation externalize and
internalize high levels of stress and anxiety due to the overload and the degree work. The
importance of implementing workshops to control stress and positively impact the integral
health of students in all aspects: physical, psychological and emotional, is highlighted.
